Toughing it out (Practice Hike)

Bacala, Alexandra Rose Callanta

The Bronze Visioneers had their first hike at Mono Cliffs on 21 July 2018. Teams hiked for approximately 6 hours with a lunch break in between. This practice hike will be included in their logs under the adventurous journey section for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DEA).
The purpose of their trip is to test the skills they have learnt during indoor and outdoor training in which they learnt how to tie various knots, write a route chart and meal plan, prepare what to pack for a hike, set up tarps and tents, and use a stove. Apart from the above practical skills, the participants had to make use of their communication skills and work together as a team to finish the hike too.
Besides testing their knowledge, the groups were able to enjoy the scenery from the top and appreciate the natural environment. It was a great way to bond and learn more about each other’s capabilities via interchanging the roles of each member as a navigator, timer, recorder, cheerleader, and sweeper.
With just a few hitches such as being doubtful of their location and their endurance, all groups were able to finish in time and rest before heading back home. During debriefing, everyone admitted that they were exhausted and agreed that they will have to shape up for their qualifying hike in Mid-August. The Visioneers have definitely learnt a lot from this experience and will definitely be even more prepared for their next hike. Overall, the youths were able to survive their practice hike without a scratch.
