Trainings for practice and qualifying hike

Nicole Chin Yuet Huang

On the 6th and 7th of July 2019, the Bronzes and Silvers had their trainings for their coming practice and qualifying hike. In the sessions, the Golds and volunteers provided the Visioneers with basic hiking skills and the knowledge necessary to keep themselves safe in a wilderness setting.

On the first day, an outdoor training was held in L’Amoreaux Tennis Centre. The session was divided into 4 parts – making a shelter by tying knots, setting up a camping tent, wild cooking using a stove, and finding directions using a compass and a map. At the end of the training, Visioneers played human knot and tug-of-war. They had a wonderful time in the training.

The Visioneers had an indoor training in Bayview Community Centre on the second day. In the workshop, they learned about basic first aid skills, for instance, treating cuts, burns and shock. They also acquired knowledge on how to avoid poisonous plants and remove ticks. In addition, they learned how to pack a hiking backpack properly. It is hoped that the Visioneers can make the best use of their skills learned in the trainings and enjoy their hike.
